'THE GREENROOM' Guest Mix from XTC NOTTINGHAM: July 24, 2013

On WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 2013, STUNNA presents another very special edition of 'THE GREENROOM.' For this session, we're treated to an exclusive guest mix from one of the UNITED KINGDOM's finest producers and seasoned DJs on the scene: XTC NOTTIINGHAM.

XTC NOTTIINGHAM (aka ADAM) started mixing back in 1989 and went on to DJ and produce in the UK's RAVE, JUNGLE, RAGGA JUNGLE, and DRUM+BASS scenes from 1992 to 1997 playing for the likes of AMNESIA HOUSE, TOTAL KAOS, JUNGLE ROCK, BUSHDOCTOR, AMAZON, among many others. He was lucky enough to produce, co-produce and remix tracks for the likes of BARRINGTON LEVY, CHAKA DEMUS, and PLIERS for GREENSLEEVES RECORDS and various other labels.

After taking time off to raise his family and ultimately build a brand-new production studio, XTC NOTTIINGHAM has recently reintegrated himself back in the modern DRUM+BASS scene with a vengeance. With global support of his music from scene luminaries LOXY, PFM, GREMLINZ, and RANDOM MOVEMENT; brand-new productions signed to SOUL DEEP RECORDINGS, LIQUID DROPS, DIRECTORS CUT, ROGUE BEATZ, and STEPPING FORWARD RECORDS; XTC NOTTIINGHAM has also found time to launch the stellar, genre-bending INSTINCT AUDIO imprint alongside fellow producer IMPACT in 2011.

Tune in this week as XTC NOTTIINGHAM drops a special mix for 'THE GREENROOM' showcasing what he's been up to in the studio lately as well as upfront sounds from around the world.

'THE GREENROOM' Guest Mix from PENNYGILES: July 17, 2013

Moving deeper into the heat of summer 2013, on JULY 17th, STUNNA presents yet another very special edition of 'THE GREENROOM.' For this installment, we're treated to an exclusive guest mix by UK-based producer/DJ on the rise: PENNYGILES.

The story of PENNYGILES’ rise to success can be considered a whirlwind romance of sorts, having gone from an unknown WELSH lad to an internationally renowned producer in the space of just over a year. Having started DJing in 2006 (mainly as an escape to deal with the monotony of living in a tiny town in MID WALES) he originally found himself immersed in the HOUSE MUSIC scene, but the loveliness and brilliance of the music coming from CALIBRE’s SIGNATURE RECORDS and MARCUS INTALEX’s Soul:R imprint turned him onto DRUM+BASS.

After continuing to DJ, listen to, and love the sound of the genre, it was only a matter of time before PENNYGILES (real name STUART MACCALLUM) tried his hand at production, and having no musical background or any real knowledge of musical theory wasn’t going to get in his way. Picking up his first DAW in 2010, he began working on his first tunes, paving the way for what has been a hugely successful couple of years for him.

Though most producers spend years and years working towards their first release, some giving up before they see any recognition at all, PENNYGILES scored his first just a year later in 2011 and has since then created a constant stream of stunning DRUM+BASS. His list of artist support reads like a list of D+B legends: the likes of LTJ BUKEM, RANDOM MOVEMENT, MAKOTO, LOXY, and BAILEY all rinse out his tunes regularly; and they’re just the tip of the iceberg.

One look at his SOUNDCLOUD Page, you’ll find out why PENNYGILES is earning all this support and why labels such as INNERGROUND, DEMAND, LIQUID V, C.I.A., IM: LTD, ALIGNMENT, INFORM, MARS, FOKUZ, RUBIK, and more have released his music. It’s not just labels who are fighting to work with him, but other producers too: he’s collaborated with the likes of ROY GREEN & PROTONE, PHIL TANGENT, SPIRANT, MR. JOSEPH, and has plenty more projects with new producers and singers alike.

You may think that his speedy ascension to fame is almost impossible for someone who started producing just over two years ago, but it was his lack of musical knowledge, combined with his insane ability to sample almost anything from his vast and eclectic collection of music and make it work, that seems to have helped PENNYGILES become one of the quickest-rising and undoubtedly-talented new faces in DRUM+BASS today. In his own words, he says that: "not knowing the ins and outs of how music works I feel gives me more freedom than anyone with great knowledge of how chords should progress."

The future is definitely looking bright for this talent on the rise. Lock in to 'THE GREENROOM' to hear an exclusive PENNYGILES mix of upfront creations from the man himself as well as like-minded producers from around the globe.

'THE GREENROOM' Guest Mix from QUADRATIC: July 3, 2013

Kicking off the month of JULY, 2013, STUNNA presents another very special installment of 'THE GREENROOM.' For this edition, we're treated to an exclusive guest mix from CHICAGO production duo QUADRATIC.

QUADRATIC crafts dance floor oddities, combining classic computer music with the outskirts of drum ‘n' bass, DETROIT electro and CHICAGO footwork. Since their first EP release in 2008, the long-simmering collaboration of COLIN HARRIS and CHRIS WIDMAN has impressed CHICAGO crowds as they've opened for and supported acts such as DAEDELUS, GIRL UNIT, HUDSON MOHAWKE, KODE9, RUSKO, DISTANCE, KING CANNIBAL, ISOLEE, OTT, LORN and BLOCKHEAD. HARRIS is an agile developer who spent many hours of his youth tweaking lines of code, playing with music trackers (and guitars), and pumping hours of BASSDRIVE out of his computer subwoofer. Graduating from a CASIO SK5 to FRUITY LOOPS to ABLETON LIVE, HARRIS has transformed his programming skills to adapt custom devices for live performance. WIDMAN is best known as a DJ, promoter and long-time host of the CHICAGO radio program 'ABSTRACT SCIENCE' on WLUW 88.7FM. Over the years, he has shared the bill with a diverse cast of underground luminaries and played every type of event imaginable, from raves to operas. The duo first met in 1998 at WIDMAN’s club residency in COLUMBIA, MISSOURI, where he first encouraged, and eventually, invaded HARRIS’ music projects: WIDMAN’s experience as a DJ and drummer complementing HARRIS' sense of melody and technical dexterity. The result is QUADRATIC.

QUADRATIC just released their latest EP, "BETWEEN THE CRACKS" on DROIDSONG RECORDINGS. They'll also be opening up for SQUAREPUSHER, Friday, July 5 at the THE METRO, CHICAGO. CHRIS WIDMAN's radio show 'ABSTRACT SCIENCE' airs Thursdays, 10pm-Midnight on WLUW 88.7FM CHICAGO. WIDMAN will also be DJing with AtomTM (aka Senor Coconut) at SMART BAR, CHICAGO July 27 and with the other 'ABSTRACT SCIENCE' DJs August 12, opening for ULRICH SCHNAUSS at LINCOLN HALL, CHICAGO.

'THE GREENROOM' Guest Mix from ROGUE STATE + JULEZ: June 26, 2013

On WEDNESDAY, JUNE 26th, 2013, STUNNA returns with another special edition of 'THE GREENROOM.' In this installment, we're treated to an exclusive guest mix from two of WASHINGTON, D.C.'s key figures in the DRUM+BASS scene: ROGUE STATE and JULEZ.

Regular listeners of BASSDRIVE Radio might be familiar with ROGUE STATE (aka BRIAN KAWAMURA) as he hosts the program 'TRANSLATION SOUND' alongside his wife MsDISDAIN (aka STEPH) every MONDAY (6-7pm Central). Showcasing the diverse sounds of his own label TRANSLATION RECORDINGS, ROGUE STATE's show features a full range of styles from his imprint (dark, melodic, dubby, and minimal) as well as further upfront sounds from global producers and like-minded labels. Future efforts from the TRANSLATION RECORDINGS camp will venture into other tempos and genres including DUB, HOUSE, and BASS music. Over the years, ROGUE STATE has been deeply integrated into the local music scene and has recently teamed up with fellow DJ JULEZ to bringing genre-bending shows to the WASHINGTON, D.C. metro area.

JULEZ (aka JULIAN PETERSON) is another pivotal figure in the D.C. bass music scene. A talented illustrator/graphic designer, curator of a wide range of electronic music styles, as well as a classically-trained musician, JULEZ acumen behind the decks has placed him in front of countless crowds of DRUM+BASS enthusiasts over the years. In 2011, JULEZ launched SubDistrick, the popular monthly D+B event in D.C. featuring a fresh, future-minded focus showcasing local DJs, producers and record labels. Most recently, JULEZ has joined forces with ROGUE STATE to bring a brand-new event entitled 'BASS AVENGERS' to the nation's capitol.

Later this evening of JUNE 26th, STUNNA, ROGUE STATE, and JULEZ triangulate at the inaugural edition of 'BASS AVENGERS' as the three descend upon U STREET MUSIC HALL in D.C. for an evening of JUNGLE, JUKE, FOOTWORK, and DRUM+BASS.

'THE GREENROOM' Guest Mix from SCOTT ALLEN: June 19, 2013

As we ready to enter the summer months here in the States, STUNNA presents yet another very special installment of 'THE GREENROOM.' On JUNE 19th, 2013, we're treated to an exclusive guest mix from the main man behind the SOUL DEEP RECORDINGS label: DJ/Producer SCOTT ALLEN.

SCOTT grew up in SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, and was a big music lover at an early age. At 10 years old he fell in love with new wave music and the synth driven tunes of the time. A couple of years later he began a new passion: collecting HIP-HOP music. A lot of SCOTT’s influence in his music production comes from these early inspirations. Whether it’s MICHAEL JACKSON, EPMD, BIG DADDY KANE, NWA, or 80’s synth pop, he knew he had a passion for music and would search for the latest rhythm and sound that would satisfy his soul.

When SCOTT was 18 years old, he moved to the LOS ANGELES area to attend college and play water polo at a 4 year University. When he moved into his dorm room he met his future deejay partner and NEOSOUL band partner, TIM ANDREN. SCOTT and TIM would spend hours talking about music and seeing who could supply the best, most underground tune with the most addictive beats and sounds. It was at this time, TIM and his other new friends introduced him to BREAKBEAT, HARDCORE BREAKS, early JUNGLE, and AMBIENT DUB music. SCOTT immediately fell in love with the overall feel and freedom with the music and began scavenging all of the L.A. music stores and attending club events to experience his new found love.

At about the age of 21, SCOTT and his roommates bought their first set of turntables and the passion for the music grew into an intense love. About 2 weeks after he bought his turntables, he was already circulating his mix tapes and getting booked to play at clubs and parties in L.A. After a year or two of playing local shows, SCOTT began playing shows all over the USA and CANADA, exposing these areas to the NEOSOUL breakbeat sound. He was fortunate enough to play alongside such heavy hitting acts as DJ DAN, DONALD GLAUDE, BASSBIN TWINS, and many other big names.

When the breakbeat scene slowed down around 2001, SCOTT went back to his roots in electronic music and began enjoying the sounds of JUNGLE music, only now the music was more refined. He began to go to DRUM+BASS events and would catch LTJ BUKEM & CONRAD, and the rest of the GOOD LOOKING crew every time they would perform in the SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA area. He was drawn to the melodic, jazzy, and ethereal sounds of DRUM+BASS music, and he especially liked it with CONRAD hypnotically weaving his lyrics over the tunes. SCOTT began collecting DRUM+BASS records and also started producing D+B in about 2004.

His production became more serious when people started hearing his songs and began to show interest in wanting more of his sound. After a few years of producing and getting a number of tracks signed to major labels, such as FOKUZ, CELSIUS, GOOD LOOKING, TELLURIC, and HAVE-A-BREAK, SCOTT decided to start his own label called SOUL DEEP RECORDINGS. Since SOUL DEEP’s inception in JANUARY 2011, the imprint has seen a great amount of success and has been established as one of the top LIQUID/DEEP/JAZZY labels in the music game. SCOTT continues to produce music and recently released his second full-length album, entitled 'SPIRIT WORLD' on TELLURIC RECORDINGS.

Tune in this week as we go deep in the mix as SCOTT ALLEN showcases exclusive music from the SOUL DEEP RECORDINGS label and more upfront original productions straight from the man himself.

'THE GREENROOM' Guest Mix from INDIDJINOUS: May 22, 2013

Years of unwanted childhood music lessons led MICHAEL MOREL to develop an aversion to common instruments like guitars and pianos. Intrigued by the unusual sounds of the didjeridu, MOREL’s true musical ambitions were sparked when he began playing the ancient AUSTRALIAN wind instrument in 1998.

Shortly afterwards, MOREL moved from the SAN FRANCISCO Bay Area to SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA where he developed a healthy obsession with DRUM+BASS and JUNGLE. Adopting the alias "INDIDJINOUS," he often played didjeridu over live DJ sets using various electric guitar pedals to distort the sound. After graduating college in 2002 he began experimenting with production, incorporating his didjeridu into many tracks. In 2005, having created a considerable number of tunes, he finally took up DJing. Today his performances typically consist of mixing his own tracks with like-minded tunes, though occasionally the didjeridu still makes an appearance.

In 2007 INDIDJINOUS headed off to the East Coast for graduate school where he explored the DRUM+BASS scenes in WASHINGTON DC, BALTIMORE, NEW YORK CITY and MIAMI. In 2011 he returned to CALIFORNIA and he currently lives in SAN FRANCISCO. The end of 2012 saw the emergence of his own internet radio show “THE OTHER SIDE” on JUNGLETRAIN airing every other Wednesday night from 8PM-9:30PM PST. In the summer INDIDJINOUS teaches an electronic music production/didjeridu class to middle school students in SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA.

Citing major influences from TECHNICAL ITCH, DOM & ROLAND, KONFLICT, PARADOX, TEEBEE, HIVE and AMIT, INDIDJINOUS tunes are cinematic, tribal and dark. His sound spans several styles of DRUM + BASS including TECHSTEP, DRUMFUNK, HALF-TIME, EXPERIMENTAL, ATMOSPHERIC and NEUROFUNK. Overtly melodic sounds are almost wholly absent in his productions. Instead he tends toward abstract sci-fi atmospherics, industrial sound effects, and dis-harmonic bass lines.

With a healthy number of releases/forthcoming pressure on respected labels such as SUBTLE AUDIO, PINECONE MOONSHINE, MANIFESTO MUSIC, OMNI MUSIC, DYSFUNK MUSIC, GOLDEN AGE, JUNGLETRAIN, DIGITAL CONSPIRACY, LW RECORDINGS and MATERIALIZM, INDIDJINOUS has recently been hard at work with notorious AUSTRALIAN producer CENTASPIKE collaborating on groundbreaking new sounds.

Tune in this session as we dive into the mind of a truly original and talented DJ/producer and are treated to an exclusive guest mix from the man known as INDIDJINOUS!
