On WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19th, STUNNA moves deeper into the month of broadcasts in 'THE GREENROOM' on BASSDRIVE Radio. During this week's session, STUNNA welcomes multi-talented DJ and producer MONIKA to the program for an exclusive guest mix in support of his debut album "HOW WE SAW FOREVER," which lands AUGUST 21st worldwide via the SPEARHEAD RECORDS imprint.
UK-born, NEW ZEALAND-based MONIKA (aka MAXWELL SWEENEY), is known for his expressive DRUM+BASS music over the years on noted labels such as SHOGUN AUDIO, MODERN CONVENIENCES, GOLDFAT, SOULVENT, LOCKED CONCEPT, CELSIUS, and FOKUZ RECORDINGS. 2026 sees the release his debut solo D+B LP entitled "HOW WE SAW FOREVER." A selection of LIQUID D+B that spans from introspective and melodic to JUNGLY and TECHY, the album is dropping on SPEARHEAD RECORDS, helmed by legendary DJ and producer BCEE. Known for consistently pushing expressive and emotional DRUM+BASS, the label is the perfect home for the project.
MONIKA discusses the album...
"I kept wondering if there was a clear theme behind these tracks, but honestly, they document a completely mad year of my life. I'd just begun a new career as a counsellor when I was hit by a car while cycling, leaving me with a fractured pelvis and a concussion. In the same year, I bought a house and travelled back to the UK to be best man at my brother's wedding. It was a period defined by upheaval, recovery, and major transitions and the music became a way of holding all of that. Sonically, I wanted the album to feel like a continuous journey rather than a loose collection of tracks. A lot of D+B LPs can feel disconnected, so I focused on cohesion; performing live piano, recording my own vocals, making the artwork myself and leaning into a melancholic, lo-fi palette. I was also incredibly lucky to collaborate with vocalists I deeply admire: PHOEBE FREYA, OKTAE, and JAVEON, whose contributions elevated the record far beyond what I could have imagined."
